Brief History of Schenectady
The land that Schenectady was established on was bought from the Mowhawk
Indians in the year 1661. The town focused on shipping goods until it was burned down to the ground in the year 1690. The
town was rebuilt and prospered until a fire in 1819 wiped out the business district near the mowhawk river. Then in 1825 the
Eire Canal was opened and Schenectady began to focus more on industry than shipping |
